How selling an original works
We list your physical original on The Walls. A buyer who likes it asks you what shipping to them costs, and you quote it. If they buy, we hold the payment until it has reached them. You ship it, and you receive your full price and the shipping the buyer paid.
Our commission (25%) is added on top of your price for the buyer.
Who can sell originals
Originals are for Resident Artists we invite to sell them. Once we do, the Sell an original button shows in the Works and Originals tabs. Open Walls never sells originals.
What you must be able to do
- You have the work with you, in the condition you describe.
- Ship it with a reliable carrier, tracked and insured for the full sale price, including customs paperwork.
- Pack it properly: rigid protection, corners, a moisture barrier, and a crate when needed.
- Pay the shipping up front. You are paid your price and the shipping once the buyer confirms it arrived as described, or 7 days after delivery with no problem reported.
- Answer shipping quotes within 3 days, and ship within your handling time (the days you set).
You confirm these before you send it for review, and the consignment agreement makes them part of the deal.
Start: the basics
Press Sell an original. Fill in the title, the year made, the kind of work, one main photo (the whole work, straight on, in even light), a few lines about it and its categories.
Tick I would also like to sell prints of this work if you want prints too. We will ask for a high resolution scan or photo.

Details and price
Then press Save as a draft at the end of the form. You can still change everything later.
- Medium (for example oil, acrylic) and what it is on (canvas, paper, panel).
- Size: width, height and depth, in inches or cm.
- Framed and Signed, with where it is signed.
- Condition: mention any marks or repairs.
- Your price: what you receive. Our commission is added for the buyer, and the shipping is what you quote each buyer.
- Ships from and Ships within (days).

Shipping: quoted to each buyer
You do not set shipping prices. When a buyer would like your original, they ask what shipping to their city costs, and we email you.
Open Shipping quotes from Needs you and type the whole cost: packing, insurance for the full price and the carrier. Or press I cannot ship there. Answer within 3 days, or the request expires.
The buyer has 7 days to buy at your price. Once they accept it, it is final: if shipping costs you more, the difference is yours.
Buyers in the EU, EEA and UK can return an original for any reason within 14 days of delivery. If they do, you refund the price and your shipping, and they pay to send it back; if it is not as described, you pay for the return too. Their requests show a Higher risk note, and you can always press I cannot ship there.

Photos
Add more photos: the front, close ups of details and texture, the edges, the signature and the back. The first photo is the main one.
Use daylight, no flash, and a plain wall. Good photos sell originals.

Confirm and send for review
Tick all three boxes and press Send for review.
- I can ship it with a reliable, tracked carrier, insured for the full sale price, with customs paperwork, within my handling time.
- I can package and protect it properly for shipping.
- I pay the shipping up front, and I am paid my price and the shipping once the buyer confirms it arrived as described, or 7 days after delivery (14 for buyers in the EU and UK) with no problem reported.

The consignment agreement
If we accept your original, we prepare a consignment agreement. Needs you shows it when it is ready. Read it and sign it with your wallet or by email.
Once we countersign, the original goes on sale.
When it sells
- We email you: the buyer has paid. Your studio shows the address and the date to ship by. The payment is held by The Walls until the buyer has it.
- Pack it well and ship it with the carrier you quoted, insured and tracked. Declare it as an original artwork at its sale price.
- Type the carrier and tracking number and press It has shipped.
- When the tracking shows it delivered, press Mark delivered.
- The buyer then has 7 days (14 in the EU and UK) to tell us of a problem. Your price and the shipping are paid once they confirm it arrived as described, or when that time passes.
- If a problem is reported, we look into it and tell you. Damage in transit is refunded to the buyer and claimed on your insurance. If the buyer sends it back, check it in Shipping quotes when it arrives.
Tips
- Before you answer a quote, check the carrier's price with insurance for the full value, and add your packing.
- Keep the packing materials ready, so you can ship within your handling time.
- Take photos of the work and the packing before you ship it.
